Indonesian 101 - A2

Twenty Assimil-style self-study units that take you from A1 to a solid A2 in Bahasa Indonesia, the direct continuation of the A1 module. Every unit now has two dialogues, one public and one at home or on the phone, each with a word-for-word translation, grammar notes, vocabulary with pronunciation, four keyed exercises and a wave review of earlier units. At this level the affixes stop being something you recognise and become something you build: the me- prefix and its sound rules, spoken nasal forms, object focus, the di- passive, -kan and -i, ber- and saling, ter- and ke-an for accidents, and nouns made with pe-, pe-an, per-an, ke-an and -an. Alongside them come reduplication, yang, because and although, if and if only, reported speech and polite requests, official notices and the formal email, se- words, the many jobs of -nya, numbers for adult life, and the Jakarta Indonesian of gue, lo and the -in verbs. The story follows Sarah back to Indonesia for a new life in a Yogyakarta kampung: registering with the RT, a phone left on the bus, sunrise on the Dieng Plateau, a visa extension, Lebaran with a colleague's family in Klaten, a weekend in Jakarta and Rina's lamaran.
